Baby
Ray was a piece commisioned by a collector who saw Stingray and asked
if I could make a smaller version. There are many similarities between
Stingray and Baby Ray; the basic knife design is the same, the handle
is fluted and wire wrapped and the blade is a single edge grind. Finally
the guard is shaped in a stylized likeness of a stingray with the pommel
a curved stinger for the tail. But as there are many similar aspects between
the two there are also many differences.
Baby Ray's handle is made from one of
the most beautiful pieces of olivewood I've ever seen. To best display
this wood I made the fluting a long slow graceful curve whereas with Stingray
I had created a tight twisting in the purpleheart handle. The fittings
for Baby Ray were fileworked steel and the inlayed wire was twisted copper.
The differences extended out into the blade. Where Stingray had a thin
whippy blade with a flat grind, Baby Ray's blade is considerably thicker
and has been hollow ground for a more dramatic shape.
