When finishing damascus I use a number of devices to
achieve a unique finish to the pattern
welded steel. Surface finishes can be achieved ranging
from the highly decorative mirror polish
followed by a hot nitre blue to an acid etch with no
secondary polish. The finish I choose often
dependson the type of knife
I'm designing. A hunter for utility knife would likely have a deep
etch followed with a light surface polish to bring out
the contrast in the pattern. This finish is
highly durable and still quite beautiful. An art knife
is a different matter; here I occasionally
will mirror polish the damascus and treat the surface
to a hot blue process in a nitre salt bath.
This method produces a very bright and flashy finish
that is sure to be a show stopper. The
disadvantage with this process is the surface finish
is not very durable. As a compromise I most
often will etch the damascus and repolish the surface
before bluing. This creates a very durable
surface finish with a beautiful mixture of blues.
