Set was the Egyptian god of the desert, storms, and chaos; said to be a usurper who killed his brother Osiris. Set was a powerful force in the Egyptian mythos and stood with Ra to repel Apep, the serpent of Chaos. Like many gods of this mythos Set is often depicted as a human with an animal head. Unlike many of the Egyptian gods the head is not immediately recognizable as belonging to a single specific animal. Instead Set has been connected to a number of animals; most notably the aardvark and the jackal.
Originally Set was a respected member of the pantheon, only in the later Egyptian periods being demonized, possibly the result of foreign invasions and/or occupations. Throughout the mythos history Set has maintained a powerful and dominant position as a major deity.
