Forging, and forge welding, pattern welded steel is
an art form in of itself. Be it coal or propane
forge, the bladesmith must focus
on the level of the forge heat, making sure the billet is well
fluxed and heated evenly. When drawn from the forge
the billet must be struck quickly and
cleanly with the hammer. Once the welding is finished
the work is still only beginning; the billet
must be drawn out and shaped into knife, sword, mosaic
bar or whatever the smith has in mind.
Even then the bladesmith must shape grind, polish, harden,
temper and finish the custom piece.
